Notes from the Lovell Neighborhood Watch Meeting: November 29, 2006:

Sergeant Timothy Ontengco gave the incidents and updates report. Ms. Lawson will be served with a warrant this week for failure to appear in court. All cases in Lovell are cleared; there are no crimes under investigation. For now, cell phone calls for 911 go to the State Police. Soon they will go directly to the Oxford County Sheriff's Department like the landline phones do now. Watch out for phone scams and call the tip line if you get any. No rug cleaning service needs to know if you own a dog and when you are home.

Legislator Roberta Muse, and Lt. Hart Daley, Detective, gave the presentation on Sex Offenders. It was a very interesting topic and will be continued into another meeting in the future, to add both Protection of Abuse Orders and Domestic Violence to the topic. It is not possible to explain everything that was said in the hour, but be assured that Legislator Muse is working hard with the State to enact laws to protect residents, children, and those being released from prison and looking for housing. "Sex Crimes" cover a wide variety of crimes, degrees, and severity. The goal is to define crimes, reporting methods, and punishment guidelines, so cases are treated differently and not lumped in together. The recent Parsonsfield case was discussed. The Lovell Selectmen are going to be at the library next Tuesday night, if you wish to ask for town rules, before a situation emerges that we are not ready to deal with.

Lt. Daley discussed the sex offender's 10 year and lifetime registrant requirements and procedures in detail. Oxford County will be at 100% compliance soon. Schools and residents are urged to check the listings at the Maine Sex Offender Registry Online Search Service and know who is living in their area. Most will move to towns where they are not the only ones, where they know they will not be bothered. There are no sex offenders in Lovell. Most predators use the Internet, and it is up to parents to be sure they know what their children are doing online. Please be safe in the real world and in cyberspace. Records of people who are on probation are public record. You may ask a Probation Officer why someone is on probation. Bail records are only available to other law enforcement agencies that will be able to find out what the restrictions on the bail are. Once someone is convicted, the case becomes public record.

Meeting attendees are happy with the group website and the way the reminder note, meeting notes, and incident report notes are sent out to members. They agreed not to put too much information on the web site, as it may keep people from wanting to come to the meetings to get the information first hand.
We are listed on the National database of Neighborhood Watch Groups, and it is our hope that other towns will also start their own groups.
Corille Bresette made up business cards with our logo and information for law enforcement officers to give to crime victims in Lovell.

Thanks for helping to keep Lovell a safer place for everyone to call home.

Lovell Neighborhood Watch

December, 2006 Update Note

Next Lovell Neighborhood Watch Meeting
Wednesday, January 17, 2007
6:30 pm to 8:00 pm

Greetings all,

There will not be a Lovell Neighborhood Watch meeting in December.

I just wanted to keep in touch and remind everyone now that winter is here, it is a good idea to be an even "better watcher." We need to think of the elderly, or anyone living alone.

During this season of giving may we be reminded to "watch" for others that may be without heat, or could be at risk of having a falling injury outside.

This is also the time of year for thieves to clean out the gifts from under the tree while you are away from home. Bring a friend with you to an ATM during the daylight hours, and leave the ipod or walkman at home. Crimes go up during the holidays. Avoid being an easy target by being aware of your surroundings at all times.

Even though things seem quiet here in town now, we should always be alert. Our call captains are ready to accept your tips anytime. Be safe, happy, and healthy throughout this holiday season.

The next meeting is January 17, 2007. Please bring a friend to the meeting with you!

Happy Holidays,
Roxanne Craig
