Next Lovell Neighborhood Watch Meeting Oxford County Sheriff Sergeant Tim Ontengco gave the incident report. It was a quiet month with only 17 incidents, including 2 drunk drivers, and 5 car accidents during Fair Week. There were 2 thefts reported. Catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles at Thurston's Garage, and a snowmobile trailer and canoe were taken from West Lovell Road. We were reminded to watch for suspicious activity and call in. When watching, remember to listen. The odd sound from a vehicle will help to identify it later. Sergeant Matthew Baker reminds us to be careful on the roads this fall. There are flocks of turkeys in various locations crossing roads. A moose or deer accident is reported almost every night now, with Route 93 being especially dangerous around 6:18 PM. To answer questions, yes, you have to report every accident as soon as possible. Yes, you will be allowed to keep the road kill for meat, or an attempt to find someone else to take it will be made for you. Sheriff Gallant reported on the prison overcrowding situation. Last month Gov. John Baldacci defended his proposal in the media to have the state Corrections Department take over the county jails, calling the present system "inefficient and unsustainable" and saying the consolidation idea is nothing new. Meanwhile alternative plans are being drafted for presentation as counter proposals. The State has prisons, the County has jails. It is the jail which gets the bulk of the medical care and transportation costs. To close a jail would require additional troopers to do nothing but transport. When a situation looks to raise our taxes, we need to pay attention.
Don't miss the next meeting! District Attorney Norman Croteau, Esq. will be our guest speaker. Did you know there is only one District Attorney for three counties?
