Notes from the Lovell Neighborhood Watch Meeting: September 26, 2007:

If you missed the last watch meeting, I am sorry to say I cannot cover all the interesting details that were covered. Now that summer is over, please try to take an hour and a half once a month to get the incident updates, and meet the officers that protect us.

Our guest speaker was Chris Cloutier from the Maine Warden service. Chris lives in neighboring Bridgton, and this was not just a talk on the rules of hunting and fishing. He began with the account of his state issued ATV being stolen and recovered. Chris spoke on lost children and the elderly, and how important it is to call the Warden Service right away once an incident is realized. He and Trooper Fillebrown explained that in the case of a missing child, the tracking dog is called in, the missing person's pillow case or pajamas are excellent items for the dog to pick up a scent from. Chris would rather arrive at your house and find the missing person napping on the back steps, than you wait three hours and end up in a more difficult search. He spoke about the recent boating fatalities on Long Lake, and about reconstructing the accident. He explained how weather, water temperature, and water depth play into survival rates, especially when snowmobiles go through the ice. He wants everyone to be aware that hunting season is in full force now and to report any suspicious shots fired. One huge problem is ATV's riding on public roads. There are orange registration stickers on the front and back of the machines. If you can get that number it would be helpful when reporting an incident. Chris told us to feel free to call him at home. He gave a briefing on Operation Game Thief call 1-800-alertus to remain anonymous and report poaching. There are also rewards offered.

Oxford County Sheriff Sergeant Matthew Baker gave the incident report. There were very few events to report. Deputy Thomas Harriman has been promoted to Detective. Many of you know Tom, and he will do excellent work. He has proved himself solving a string of crimes here in Lovell. We wish him well. He was on duty and did get called away from our meeting. We are grateful to Sergeants Baker and Ontengco for pulling trees out of the road in the August 25 wind storm.

Lt. Walter Grzyb and Trooper Adam Fillebrown were in attendance representing the Maine State Police. Walter is a veteran of the department, and recently promoted to Lt. He informed us that a new trooper, Chris Farley, fresh out of the Academy, is patrolling the Lovell area. One resident asked about child ID. Walter is looking into a program with kits for each child to be processed with a blood sample. Stay tuned, we will let you know when the date is. Anyone interested in helping with this please call me at 925-3295.

Trooper Fillebrown reported no more information had been received in the mailbox smashings near Conifer in early August. He also wanted to warn area contractors that building materials, doors, windows, and staging was stolen from the Cushman Pond area. Adam said it usually does not end with one case, so beware of moving building materials . Please call dispatch to report any unusual activity.

In closing, all officers wanted to stress this is Fair Week ….drive carefully! There could be many strange characters in our area so do not hesitate to report anything that is not normal.
We are open to suggestions on topics for future meetings. What would you like to learn more about?
Thanks Corille for the yummy refreshments.
Please join us at the next meeting, and bring a friend. Thanks for pulling together as a very successful watch group.
