Notes from the Lovell Neighborhood Watch Meeting: April 23, 2008

Sergeant Timothy Ontengco gave an interesting presentation on Reporting Suspicious Activities. One of the hardest things in remembering what a car looks like is the license plate. With around 50 different plates being issued now in Maine, if you can tell what color it is, or what logo is on it, there is a better chance of finding the vehicle. Report anything out of the normal and let the police decide what to do with the information. What might seem like, "just something odd" to you, could be important to the police regarding something else.

The RCC was also discussed. The Regional Control Center dispatches cars to locations. There was a confusing article in the newspaper regarding the upgrades done at the RCC. Let your neighbors know that they can always call 911 in an emergency. The dispatcher will know what zone we are in, and where to send the call for coverage.

Sergeant Matthew Baker gave the incident report for both The Oxford County Sheriff's Department, and The State Police. There were very few calls in Lovell this past month! Don't forget to file a form if you would like patrol cars to keep an eye on your home while you are on vacation.

Add to your calendar: The next Child ID Day will be held on October 25, 2008. Remember to bring your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbor's children to this very important day. I cannot stress enough how important this is to do this, and keep the kit for your child. The child ID kit is free.

Thanks for being a part of the team to keep Lovell safe.

Please post this scam alert that I just received today

SCAM!
1.Male or female caller with a very heavy accent (India) and in the back ground you can hear a lot of people talking at the same time.
2.Caller will state that they will be issuing a new Personal ID Number and they are just checking on the name of the bank that their Social Security Checks are deposited into.
3.They state that they won't ask any personal information but they ask you to verify your name, age and address.
4.The caller asked for a specific person in the household and they called him by his first name.
5. The person that answered the phone hung up and received a second call this time from a female with the same accent (same background noise) calling the female of the house by her first name and stating that they were going to issue her a new Medial Card Number and they were just verifying the name of the back where her social security check goes. There was no number showing on the caller ID except for an area code of 975.

RED FLAGS!
*Callers have very heavy accents, difficult to understand what they are saying
*Background noise-several people talking all at once in same room
*Personal ID Numbers being issued over the phone-this does not happen!
*Asking for name of the bank
*Checking on Social Security Deposits
*Asking to verify name, age and address

USE CAUTION if in doubt CHECK IT OUT!
Never give out your bank name or number or verify that you have a direct deposit of your Social Security Checks
Never verify your information over the phone (unless you make the phone call to a business etc)
