Special Click It or Ticket Enforcement Mobilization Aimed at Increasing Seat Belt Use and Saving Lives
With the holidays upon us and millions of Americans hitting the roads, the Maine State Police wants everyone to arrive safely at their destinations. So, drivers and passengers should be on the lookout as Troopers will be out in force in Androscoggin, Cumberland and Oxford Counties sending the strong message to Click It or Ticket. Special seatbelt enforcement details will be conducted in high crash locations during the two week period from November 15th to November 28th to coincide with the national campaign.
"No one wants to start the holidays off wrong with a ticket," said Lt. Walter Grzyb, Troop Commander for Androscoggin, Cumberland and Oxford Counties. While seat belt use is at a record high of 85% nationwide, 45 million Americans still fail to buckle up when they get in a motor vehicle. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), on any given day about 38 passenger vehicle occupants who are not buckled up are killed in motor vehicle crashes.
In 2008 alone, nearly 13,000 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants lost their lives on U.S. roadways. It is estimated that nearly one third of these lives could have been saved if they had been properly belted. NHTSA statistics also show that those least likely to buckle up are teens; young adults; males; nighttime riders; motorists traveling on rural roads; and individuals traveling in pickup trucks.
"Sadly, the holidays, which for many are the happiest time of the year, is also one of the deadliest and most tragic," said Lt. Grzyb.
Sheriff Wayne Gallant would like you to check your inspection stickers and plates to make sure you are current!
Some stats:
Since September 1st the Sheriffs Department has only had 37 calls in Lovell.
For the past month only 12 incidents for Police.
For the past month only 9 incidents for Sheriffs.
What fantastic news that things are "quiet."
Beware the door to door folks are around - DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH STRANGERS!
The fresh snow today reminds us of winter mode - leave early drive carefully.
It is time to check on others and report unusual scenes.
Remember there is no meeting in December ~ next meeting January 19, 2011!
Be safe and warm, and be alert, report those incidents.
Happy Thanksgiving to all,
